Gandalf the Grey Premium Format

Gandalf the Grey Premium Format

I finally get a chance to review a Premium Format statue from Sideshow Collectibles and what better way to begin than with one of the best rated and most popular Premium Formats to date, Gandalf the Grey from the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The Sideshow Exclusive version retails for a price of $299.99, is limited to an edition size of 650 and includes an additional head sculpt without the hat. The regular version, which I am reviewing, goes for $289.99 with an edition size of 1,000. I received statue #155.

“A wizard is never late, nor is he early, he arrives precisely when he means to.”

Gandalf the Grey came packaged in four parts: Base, right arm holding staff, head and body. I’ll begin with the base. It’s circular in shape, with a dark brown ring around the edge, nameplate in front and on top two steps carved into stone and rock which Gandalf descends. The base design is in the same theme as all other Lord of the Rings PF’s so it will match well with any others you may decide to display with it. The base is fairly simplistic with a lack of color yet it looks great and stands tall, adding a few extra inches to Gandalf’s overall height (about 28 inches from base to the tip of his staff). You will certainly need a larger than average shelf to display him. View full article »

Ok, when I fiWillow Statuerst saw the teaser pic of the Willow and Faith statues I wasn’t to thrilled. Willows face looked way off. Now that Sideshow has released the full gallery of pics I’ve changed my mind. It still doesn’t look quite right in some angles, but looks much better than I thought it was going to. The lighting in the teaser pic didn’t do it justice. The clothing still seems a little too sexy for Willow, but I guess that’s what Sideshow wants. I don’t think too many will be complaining, but it isn’t very accurate to her character. A lot more details were also revealed about this piece.

The Exclusive Willow Statue, which includes a switch-out backpack with sculpted werewolf plush inside and sculpted werewolf plush base accessory, will be priced at $224.99 with an Edition Size of 250 pieces. A 10%, or $22.50, non-refundable deposit will be charged within 24 to 48 hours of your pre-order being placed for the Exclusive version of this Statue. Additionally, a Regular Edition, without the additional accessories, will be available for Pre-Order and priced at $224.99.

The exclusive will be awesome! A werewolf plushie, how cool is that? Not to mention Amy the rat is hiding on the base and any Buffy fan will instantly recognize the base design art from the episode Fear, Itself from season 4 in which Gachnar the Dark Lord of Nightmares (who turned out to be about the size of an action figure) was summoned in “Actual Size” after a symbol was painted on the floor. That symbol is shown on the base. Willow should be available for preorder within the next 24 hours. Can’t wait to add her beside my Throne of the Slayer!

Spider-Man Hot Toys Figure

Spider-Man Hot Toys Figure

The prototype images of the Hot Toys Spider-Man figure have been released and the response has been mostly positive, though a couple complaints keep popping up from collectors. Those being about the feet and webbing of Spidey’s costume. The ankles of this figure appear to not be at all poseable due to the boot design implemented by Hot Toys. That’s a real shame considering all the classic Spider-Man poses that will be unavailable because of this decision. The webbing of his outfit also appears too brightly colored according to many fans, but keep in mind these are pictures of a prototype so changes are possible. Regardless of the complaints, this is a must buy figure for me. I think it looks fantastic despite these issues. I recently acquired my first Hot Toys figure (Ezio from Assassin’s Creed 2) and was blown away by the quality and craftsmanship Hot Toys puts into these collectibles. I will hopefully be adding many more to my collection in the future and the Spider-Man line will definitely be among them. More details and pictures after the break. View full article »

Hot Toys Spider-Man 3 Figure Teaser

Just found this picture teasing a 1:6 scale Spider-Man Hot Toys figure. This has potential to be one of the most popular figures from Hot Toys if they get it right, and they usually do.

Sideshow posted an image recently previewing two new pieces from their Buffy line. Faith and Willow are pictured behind the Buffy Summers:  Throne of the Slayer statue. The Faith statue is a bit hard to make out due to bad lighting, but she looks ok from what I can see. Will need to see some better pictures at some point to form an opinion. However, the Willow piece has issues. This may just be a prototype, but that face sculpt needs some serious work and why is she wearing hot pants? Very out of character. Seriously Sideshow, back to the drawing board with this one.

New Buffy Statues

License: Friday The 13th Type: Polystone Statue
Size: 18″ H x 13″ W x 14″ L Weight: 10 pounds

Before I begin this review, I would like to thank Michael Crawford of http://www.mwctoys.com and Sideshow Collectibles for the opportunity. I won this statue during Sideshow’s Spooktacular event from mwctoys.com.

Jason Voorhees Staute

Jason Voorhees: Terror of Crystal Lake

Now onto my review of the Exclusive Jason Voorhees: The Terror of Crystal Lake Statue. This piece from Sideshow Collectibles retails for $229.99 with an edition size of 400 for the exclusive and 1000 for the regular. I received statue number 201. The exclusive only includes an art print based on the design of this statue, which is a little disappointing. I would rather Sideshow not even produce an exclusive unless the statue itself is physically different or has alternate display parts.

A towering masked killing machine, Jason Voorhees has slashed his way through eleven Friday the 13th films, rising again and again from his watery grave to inflict brutal revenge on any hapless teens, camp counselors, or poor souls who dare trespass the cursed and haunted shores of Camp Crystal Lake. Once a living man, Jason is now an unstoppable supernatural being, and even though his torn and decomposed body wears all the damage inflicted upon him by his would-be destroyers, Jason will not rest until all who cross him are dead. Jason Voorhees is now and forever the terror of Crystal Lake.

Lara Croft: Snow Day Review

License: Tomb Raider Type: Polystone Statue
Size: 14.5″ H x 13″ W x 11″ L Weight: 10 pounds

Lara Croft Snow Day

Lara Croft Snow Day

Sideshow has only recently begun to expand their licensing of statues based on videogames, such as Halo and God of War. Up for review now is the Lara Croft: Snow Day polystone statue from the Tomb Raider series. I will be reviewing the Sideshow Exclusive statue, which is unfortunately identical to the regular edition as the only extra included with the exclusive is an art print of the design by Adam Hughes.

Sideshow Collectibles and Adam Hughes are proud to bring you the Lara Croft: Snow Day Statue, depicting the legendary heroin of Tomb Raider: Underworld. Cast in high-quality polystone, this sculpture is taken directly from designs by renowned artist Adam Hughes, whose critically acclaimed realistic illustration meets pin-up style art has made him a sought after artist and perennial fan favorite.

The exclusive is limited to an edition size of 500 (though Sideshow incorrectly states 550 on their website) and retails at Sideshow Collectibles for $259.99. I received statue #281. This piece comes in seven parts: Base, ponytail, uzi, shotgun, canteen, map and of course the beautiful Lara Croft. Lara sits atop a trunk attached to the base with the included map positioned in her hands. The shotgun is propped beside her and held into place with a metal pin. The smaller uzi weapon is loose so as to be placed anywhere, but the optimal location is on the silver case beside Lara. The canteen also sits on the trunk next to Lara. That’s quite a lot of accessories for a non-Premium Format Sideshow piece. View full article »

River Tam - Big Damn Heroes Animated Maquette

River Tam In Battle Pose

This is my second statue review from a show created by the mind of Josh Whedon. As you may already know, I’m a huge Whedon fan and Firefly is without question my favorite television show of all time. The animated sculpt of this piece is based on the likeness of character River Tam from the TV series Firefly and Serenity movie. River Tam, played by Summer Glau, is one badass female, much like Buffy Summers from another of Whedon’s creations. The River Tam – Big Damn Heroes Animated Maquette from Quantum Mechanix retails for $69.95. The statue is limited to an edition size of 1,500. I received statue #1,426. View full article »
